Clogging: Beginner
This course is one that builds on top of the Clogging: Novice course here at YouDance.com. Make sure that one is completed before attempting this course. In Clogging: Beginner, you will learn more complex clogging movements. All of these steps will help you improve your understanding of rhythm. Clogging shoes are great to wear, but tennis shoes will be okay for this level of course.

Week 1: Introduction to Beginner Clogging

Week 2: Shuffle

1- Lesson: The Shuffle
You’ll learn the shuffle step (aka the “double step”) in this lesson. The shuffle step is one of the most used steps in clogging. It consists of 3 distinct sounds.

2- Practice: The Shuffle
Practice along with Courtney as you do the shuffle step. Make sure that you have the movement down really well before moving on. Rewatch the video as much as needed.

3- Combo: Shuffles
Dance the shuffle step again, but this time you will do it faster and with music. Music in clogging adds another layer of sound and makes it more fun and interesting.

Practice along with Courtney as you do the shuffles to music in this fun combo!

Week 3: Scuff & Slap

1- Lesson: Scuff
Scuffing is when you strike your heel along the ground in a forward motion. It is a fun movement that comes from the flatfooting style of dance.

2- Practice: Scuff
Time to practice the scuff! Make sure you are flexing your foot and swinging your leg low. Practice as many times as needed to have the movement down really well.

3- Lesson: Slap
The slap is similar to a scuff that it is from the Flatfooting style of dance. But it is opposite in every other way. This movement is done in a backward direction and you are striking the ball of your foot to the ground.

4- Practice: Slap
Practice the slap. Make sure you are using your ankle in order to make contact with the floor. You got this! Keep practicing until you have it down.

5- Combo: Scuff & Slap
In this combo you will combine the scuff and the slap and dance them in a single count of 8 to music.

Week 4: Beginner Pullbacks

1- Lesson: Level 1 Pullback
There are several ways to do a pullback in clogging. In this lesson, you will learn one of the most basic ways. It’s level 1 of a series of 5 levels of pullbacks.

2- Practice: 1 Pullback
It is vital that you practice this level 1 pullback over and over until you have it down well. The next lesson builds upon this movement.

3- Lesson: Level 2 Pullback
This is the 2nd pullback in the 5 pullback series. It is just a little different than a level 1 pullback.

4- Practice: 2 Pullback
Practice this level 2 pullback as much as needed before moving on to the combo!

5- Combo: Beginner Pullbacks (1 & 2)
This combo will take the level 1 pullback and the level 2 pullback and combine them into a full series. This is a long combo at 4 full counts of 8, but you got this!

6- Practice: Beginner Pullbacks Combo
Because this combo is so long and is comprised of many steps, it is especially important to practice it a lot!

Week 5: The "And" Count

Week 6: Scuff Up & Gallop

1- Lesson: Scuff Up
Scuff ups are a combination of 3 clogging moves that you already know - the step, scuff, and jump-up. It’s a high energy movement.

2- Practice: Scuff Up
Time to practice the Scuff Up! Do it as many times as you need to until you have it down so well that you don’t even have to think about it.

3- Lesson: Gallop
The gallop is similar to the scuff up in that it is comprised of 3 clogging movements that you already know. It has a step and jump-up, just like the scuff up, but the gallop has a knock instead of a scuff.

4- Practice: Gallop
Practice the gallop over and over until you have it down. When you’re ready - you can move on to the combination next.

5- Combo: Gallop Up
This combination has up doing the scuff up and the gallop, back to back. It’s really fun and requires a lot of high energy. Let’s go!

Practice the gallop up combination with and without music. Feel free to slow down or speed up the video if you need to review slowly or challenge yourself!

Week 7: Cowboy

1- Lesson: Rockstep
The rockstep is a very simple beginner movement, but it is important to know because it is used a lot in clogging.

2- Practice: Rockstep
Practice the rockstep. Because the movement is so simple, work on the stylization of it. Make sure you are getting the contrast between the high movement of the rock back and the low step when you rock forward.

3- Combo: Cowboy
The cowboy is a very stylized combo involving shuffles, a scuff up and the rockstep. It is the longest combo you’ve learned yet, at 2-counts of 8 in length.

Week 8: Turkey

1- Lesson: Single
The single is a mini-combo. It combines the shuffle step with the rockstep. Go ahead and review both of those movements if needed, before attempting this lesson.

Practice the single as many times are you need before moving on.

3- Lesson: Heel Walk
For the first time in your clogging lessons, you are going to be placing weight on just the heel of your foot.

4- Practice: Heel Walk
The heel walk is a movement that needs to be practiced a lot in order to do it correctly. Make sure that you have two loud and distinct sounds when executing the heel walk.

5- Combo: Turkey
The turkey is a really fun combo that combines the single (shuffle and rockstep) with a heel step. There is an opportunity to add an extra little movement in this lesson. Challenge yourself and go for it!

This combo has a lot of different parts, so make sure you practice it over and over again.

Week 9: Triple Grapevine

1- Lesson: Triple
The triple is a step that combines 3 shuffles with 1 rockstep.

This should be a fairly easy move for you. But make sure you practice until you have them down fast with good sounds.

3- Lesson: Crossovers
Crossovers are also called the “grapevine” if you’ve ever done a line dance at a wedding or party before, you’ve probably done this classic step.

While practicing this movement, make sure that you are keeping your hips and shoulders facing forward the entire time.

This is a fun combo that has us combining the triple and the grapevine to make a whole new step!

Week 10: Samantha

1- Lesson: Fancy Double
This step is in the same “class” as the single and the triple. But, unlike the single and triple, this movement has TWO rocksteps. Thats what makes it “fancy.”

Although this is a simple movement, practice it a few times to make sure you really have it down before moving on.

3- Lesson: Drag
Arguably the most famous clogging step, the drag is incorporated in many advanced clogging steps. You will learn the drag in it’s most basic form in this lesson.

This ones tricky! Make sure you are practicing it a lot.

This combo is really well known in the clogging community. It’s a great one because it helps you practice two of the most common steps - the shuffle and the drag.

Week 11: Rockstep Replace

You will learn how to replace a rockstep with bucks in this lesson. We will do it with a single, fancy double, and triple step.

COURTNEY
Courtney, founder of YouDance.com, brings a wealth of experience and passion to the world of dance. With 14 years of teaching under her belt, she specializes in clogging, a dance form close to her heart. Her journey in dance began in her teenage years, which led to competing in clogging and dancing in college. Notably, she served as the director of a dance team who toured Europe, showcasing their clogging skills for three consecutive summers. She is a mom of 3 girls and loves spending her days bringing the joy of dance to the homeschool community.

Kids between the ages of 7-18 who have previously completed Clogging: Novice

This is a 11-week course. You will complete 2-6 videos per week and take 1 quiz per wek.

You are able to use a sturdy pair of tennis shoes in leu of clogging shoes for this level of course. Dancing on a hard floor vs carpet is recommended in order for you to hear your sounds properly.
